Santa Barbara earned the nickname 'The American Riviera' after the 1925 earthquake prompted rebuilding in Spanish Colonial Revival style, creating a cohesive architectural identity unique to California's coast.
In December 1925, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Santa Barbara, destroying much of the downtown. Rather than rebuild in scattered architectural styles, the city's planning and design guidelines encouraged Spanish Colonial Revival construction—a look rooted in the area's Mission heritage and Mediterranean geography. Downtown Santa Barbara, State Street, and residential neighborhoods were reimagined with white-stucco walls, red tile roofs, and arched loggias that now define the city's visual character across more than 200 blocks.
